New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) youngster Ayush Mhatre made an impressive debut for the five-time champions in their blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday, April 20. 17-year-old Mhatre was roped in by CSK as a replacement for their injured skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad earlier this week.

Mhatre was handed his CSK debut against the Mumbai Indians at his home ground – the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. He walked out to bat at no.3 for the Men in Yellow and went on to play a blazing knock of 32 runs off just 15 balls to leave the fans, experts and his teammates in awe. The 17-year-old showed little signs of nerves as he went after the Mumbai Indians bowlers from the word go.

Mhatre got off the mark with a single off left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar in the fourth over before smashing him for a four and a six off the next two deliveries he faced. The 17-year-old dispatched a second consecutive six over deep square leg to get two sixes in a row against Ashwani as he got off to a flying start.

The talented right-hander gave much-needed impetus to CSK’s innings after a sluggish start and helped the visitors capitalise in the Powerplay. Mhatre played fearlessly and raced to 24 off just 10 balls in the Powerplay, helping CSK get 46 runs from it. He was eventually caught by Mitchell Santner on the boundary line off Deepak Chahar’s bowling in the 7th over after scoring 32 off 15 balls, laced with 4 fours and 2 sixes.

Young guns shining on the IPL stage

If it was 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi for Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Saturday, it was 17-year-old Mhtare for CSK on Sunday as young guns continue to shine on the IPL stage. Suryvanshi, who made his debut for RR against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday, became the youngest player in IPL history at 14.

He got off the mark in style in his IPL career with a six off Shardul Thakur and played an impressive knock of 34 runs off 20 balls, laced with three sixes and two fours. His India U-19 opening partner Mhatre grabbed his opportunity with both hands on his debut for CSK with a quickfire knock for the five-time champions at the Wankhede Stadium.

Mhatre, who plays for Mumbai in the domestic circuit, did well in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 with 471 runs in 8 matches, including 2 centuries and a solitary fifty. The 17-year-old had attended trials at CSK last year but was not picked up by the franchise in the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, he was roped in by the five-time champions to replace injured Gaikwad.
