AIFF awards: Lallianzuala Chhangte best again, Indumathi Kathiresan wins top women’s prize

New Delhi: After being named player of the year for 2023-24 season, Lallianzuala Chhangte is now only the fifth player to get the All India Football Federation’s topmost award more than once.

His second successive player of the year award enabled Chhangte to join IM Vijayan, Jo Paul Ancheri, Bhaichung Bhutia and Sunil Chhetri to have won the award at least two times.

With 10 goals in 25 games, the predominantly left footed Chhangte was the helped Mumbai City to the Indian Super League Cup triumph. He was the highest scoring Indian in the top-tier tournament, having netted 11 times and set up seven goals in all competitions for Mumbai, also scoring against Qatar in India’s FIFA World Cup in June.

His stellar form has earned the 27-year-old a contract extension with Mumbai till the 2026/27 season.

For helping Odisha FC win their maiden Indian Women’s League title with her five goals and scoring against Estonia in the Turkish Women’s Cup, Indumathi Kathiresan was chosen as the female player of the year at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi on Friday.

David Lahlansanga was adjudged the most promising player of year for his 34 goals across competitions for Mohammedan Sporting that fetched them the Calcutta Football League and I-League titles.

Eighteen year old Neha was picked as the most promising women footballer of the year for his two strikes in India’s SAFF U19 Women’s Championship win in Bangladesh and three goals for Haryana in Haryana’s run to the final of the Senior Women’s National Football Championship for Rajmata Jijabai Trophy.

Jamshedpur FC’s Khalid Jamil and India U-19 women’s team coach Sukla Dutta were recipient of the men and women’s coach of the year awards respectively.

Ramachandran Venkatesh was given the referee of year award while Ujjal Halder became the assistant referee of the year.
