New Delhi: Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has agreed a deal to become the new manager of the English national football team according to a report by BBC. Tuchel is set to become only the third non-British permanent manager that the FA has ever appointed. The other two being the Italian, Fabio Capello and the Swedish manager Sven-Göran Eriksson. All three of them have been appointed in this millennium.
Tuchel’s appointment comes after previous manager Gareth Southgate resigned following the UEFA Euro 2024 final loss to Spain. The FA decided to name England U21 manager Lee Carsley as interim manager as they wanted to take time in choosing the right candidate rather than appointing one hastily. Carsley will remain incharge of the first team for the Three Lions remaining two UEFA Nations League fixtures of this calendar year, against Greece and Republic of Ireland.

While the FA did take their time in deciding their leading candidate, once they narrowed it down to Tuchel, it didn’t take long for the deal to be completed. Only earlier today, reports emerged from England that the FA had initiated talks with the former Chelsea manager and the deal was agreed less than 24 hours later. The German manager is expected to be unveiled as the new England gaffer at Wembley later this week.
The FA were initially interested in bringing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola over from the Etihad Stadium but he didn’t express concrete interest in the role, which led the FA towards Tuchel. There were other names linked to the vacant managerial position such as those of current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and another former Chelsea boss in Graham Potter but turns out neither of them were even close to the appointment.

According to a report from Skysports, the Technical Director of the FA, John McDermott, wanted a manager who has a proven track record of winning trophies and Tuchel fits that description to the glove. The German has been a winner at all four of the major clubs he’s managed. He was most recently the manager of Bayern Munich and despite a turbulent tenure with the Bavarians, he guided them to the Bundesliga title in his first season at the club.
He won his first major trophy with Borussia Dortmund before heading to PSG where he won the league title twice in addition to four more cup tournaments. He even guided the Parisians to a UEFA Champions League final but lost to his future club Bayern Munich. He left PSG to join Chelsea where he took the Blues to their third UEFA Champions League final and masterminded a victory of Pep’s Manchester City, a year on from his defeat with PSG.
He won two more trophies with the Blues before he was let go by the club’s new owners. Tuchel will find a lot of familiar faces in the England camp, having worked with the likes Harry Kane and Eric Dier at Bayern Munich. Reece James and Mason Mount, two of England’s brightest prospects that are struggling with injury issues, performed their best under the German and he knew how to keep them fit so that would be another advantage of having the German become the new Three Lions gaffer.
