AIFF offers three months salary as compensation to sacked India head coach Igor Stimac

Kolkata: The All India Football Federation has offered three months of salary as compensation to men’s national team head coach Igor Stimac after sacking him on Monday.

The AIFF held a virtual meeting involving its semior officials and decided to relieve him of his duties after the Croat coach failed to drive India to the third round of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“We have offered him three months salary as compensation. He is yet to respond to our letter informing him of our decision,” an official told News9 Sports on condition of anonymity.

Stimac’s position became untenable after India drew goalless with Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6 and lost 1-2 to Qatar five days later to finish third in the World Cup qualifying group.

The top two teams in Qatar and Kuwait qualified for the third round after Stimac had promised to guide India to it for the first time in history.

But he didn’t step down as he had declared and had told the team that he would speak to the federation before taking a call.

Stimac came to India in May 2019 and his contract was initially extended for two years on October 4, 2022. It was stretched for another two years in October 2023, in which his salary was increased from $24,000 to $30,000 for the first year, which would swell to $40,000 in the final year, irrespective of the results.

Reports had suggested that the Stimac’s contract doesn’t have a severance clause, which has tied AIFF’s hands despite willingness to sack him on the recommendation of its technical committee, chaired by IM Vijayan, after a disastrous AFC Asian Cup campaign in January where they were beaten in all three group games, conceding six goals, failing to score even once.

But as reported on March 30, his contract did have a ‘termination clause’ though it didn’t have any performance related sub-clause in it, complicating the termination process, which is why it might not be the end of the episode.
The federation has waited for Stimac to resign voluntarily, taking ownership of the failed World Cup qualifier campaign. But the 1998 World Cup-bronze medal winning defender didn’t do so, forcing the AIFF to act.
“The whole country wants him to go. W have only acted as per the prevailing mood in the Indian football community,” the official said.
The AIFF is yet to think of anyone – be it home-grown or overseas – as Stimac’s successor even on an interim basis, possibly anticipating him not to accept the terms and conditions offered to him.
