Premier League 2024/25: Wolves collect first win; Fulham cruise to victory

New Delhi: Premier League matchday 11 started with four games played simultaneously in the same time slot. The weekend started with Liverpool leading the points table, having lost just one game this season.  Manchester City lost their first game of the season last weekend, and the defending champions are looking to get back on the board.

Wolverhampton Wanderer hosted the table bottomers from last weekend, while 14th-placed West Ham took on Everton, who were close to the relegation zone. Crystal Palace hosted Fulham, who had entered the top half of the table last weekend. Brentford were in ninth place after winning last weekend and hosted Bournemouth, coming from a loss last week.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers got off to a flying start in the first half against Southampton when Pablo Sarabia found the back of the net in just the second minute from kick-off after a fantastic run from Matheus Cunha from the midfield before playing a through ball to Sarabia.

Six minutes into the second half, the Wolves doubled their lead, this time through Cunha, who made two touches after receiving the ball outside the box from Mario Lemina and launching the shot. West Ham’s goalkeeper Jose Sa then ensured that Southampton were not able to comeback in the game after the lead. The win is their first in the season as they managed to keep a clean sheet for the first time 23 Premier League games.

West Ham and Everton’s first half remained goalless as neither side could break the deadlock. The Toffees had more possession, while the Hammers were able to create a few opportunities towards the end of the half, with Jordan Pickford denying both Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio.

Both sides played even more cautiously. Though the Hammers were breaking Everton’s defences, Pickford was able to fend off any scoring chances from both Rodriguez and substitute Ings, frustrating the hosts. Unlike the first half, West Ham did create more chances in the second half but made little difference to their points tally. Everton, though, may have controlled the game with more possession, but they failed to make an impact and threatened the Hammers’ defence.

Bournemouth, too, found themselves ahead of the hosts Bournemouth when Evanilson scored in the 17th minute when he intercepted a Sepp van den Berg pass and drove it into the slot. However, Yoane Wissa equalized just ten minutes later from Mathias Jensen’s long throw. VAR validated the goal after the Cherries appealed for a foul.

Bournemouth, after the break, got ahead of the hosts in the 49th minute when Justin Kluivert, with Lewis Cook making a perfect pass. However, a minute later, Mikkel Damsgaard pushed Brentford to an equalizer from Bryan Mbeuno’s pass. Wissa then scored his second goal of the night after Vitaly Janelt broke into the visitor’s line and made a measured pass to the 28-year-old forward. With that, Brentford played more cautiously as they fended off any threat from the visitors to take home three points from the weekend.

At half-time, Fulham managed to get ahead of the home side Crystal Palace. They had started the game at a quick pace and had almost broken the deadlock when Reiss Nelson had found the net. Initially, Palace were able to defend well. Marc Guehi missed a chance at the back post while Jean-Philippe Mateta’s shot was cleared from the line. Raul Jiminez made an excellent pass in the extra time to Emile Smith Rowe, who shot with his left foot to double the lead.

For the most part of the second half, Fulham were in complete control of the game as Palace kept missing the big chances. During the closing minutes, Harry Wilson doubled Fulham’s first-half lead coming from the bench as Alex Iwobi made a pass from the left side. Wilson made no mistake to finish it with his left foot. The win will ensure that Fulham take three points from Selhurst Park.

Wolverhampton Wanderers win their first game of the season, beat Southampton 2-0. Fulham takes 0-2 win at Selhurst Park as Brentford snatch 3-2 win over Bournemouth as West Ham, Everton play draw.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
