AIIMS researchers develop new technology that may reduce diabetes by 32%

New Delhi: Diabetes continues to be a major health burden across the world, with about thirty-one million people in India diagnosed with diabetes between 2019 to 2021, according to official data. The cure for diabetes still remains a dream but it can be managed with medications and alternative therapies. In an exclusive interaction with TV9 Bharatvarsh, Dr Nikhil Tandon, Head of the Endocrinology Department of AIIMS made a big statement, claiming that some new technology has been invented with which diabetes can be reduced by 32 per cent. This is the first such long research study in South Asia.

What is this technology?

According to Dr Tandon, researchers after a decade of conducting the study, have concluded that this technology may reduce diabetes. The technology can help reduce the severity of kidney, nerve pain and eye-related diseases to a large extent and not only this but heart diseases can also be controlled by 28 per cent.

Explaining how was the software developed, Dr Tandon noted that they first prepared clinical support with the help of a private company. In this, they fed over two thousand possibilities and uploaded the suggestions prepared accordingly. While, the advantage of the software is that all the information from the effect of medicines on each patient could be examined through the technology.

The software offered options

The real condition of the patient can be understood through the software, this is possible because the patient’s old data was checked through the information fed in the software, noted Dr Tandon. Based on this, medicines were given to the patients which turned out to be quite beneficial

Kidney disease was reduced by 32 per cent

Not only diabetes but also kidney diseases have been managed by the software, as per the report. As per Dr Tandon, blood pressure and cholesterol levels in patients have been reduced through the software.

The study was conducted on 1,146 patients in 10 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Goa. Out of all the patients, half were using their old treatment and the other half were treated with the new technique. All the patients who participated in the study were followed up for six and half years, during this time, the researchers found that their blood sugar levels, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol remained under control. Due to this, there was a 32 per cent reduction in kidney, eye and nerve pain. As well as vascular-related problems were minimised by 28 per cent, hence heart diseases also saw a reduced risk.

According to Dr Tandon, the study has been included in the National Health Program of the Central Government. This research started in the year 2011 and was completed in September 2019.

Shortcomings in diabetes diagnosis

In India, the diagnosis and awareness of diabetes have multiple shortcomings at many levels including testing, treatment, and management of diabetes in the country. About 50 per cent of the population is not aware of their condition because of this the treatment is delayed and the condition deprives even more. Around 50 per cent of the patients do not get treatment and 50 per cent of those who are undergoing treatment do not take complete treatment.
