AIMS establishment in Kerala: War of words erupt between Tharoor and Chandrasekhar

Thiruvananthapuram: Establishment of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) in Kerala, a long pending dream of the state which has been demanding for the same with the central government has now turned out to be a war of words between the BJP and the Congress with the Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor accusing former union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar and the BJP of ‘misleading the voters by giving false promises’.

However, the former union minister in a sharp response accused Tharoor of failing to keep any of the promises for the last 15 years.

The row began when the Congress Working Committee took a swipe at the BJP for allegedly making false promises in the name of AIMS.

In a post Shashi Tharoor said in X, “I stated during the election campaign that no MP can promise to set up an AIMS in any location of his choice. It depends on what the state government proposes and the central government agrees to. Despite my best efforts, and intensive lobbying for the AIMS in my constituency, I honestly told the voters that the state government had opted for Kozhikode and that was the sole choice before the centre. Yesterday, Health minister Veena George informed the state assembly that the central government has accepted the Kerala governments proposal to set up an AIMS in Kozhikode. Shame on those BJP candidates who misled voters by promising otherwise!”.

At the same time Veena George has informed the assembly that the Central government has accepted Kerala’s proposal to set up the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Kinalur in Kozhikode. 150 acres of land belonging to the industries department at Kinalur has been acquired for AIIMS. Veena George said that steps to acquire the remaining 50 acres are in the final stage.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar lashed out at Shashi Tharoor stating that the MP has failed to keep any of his promises for the last 15 years.

He said, “The reality is that the Kerala BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and I will do more for the people of Thiruvananthapuram in the next five years than the smooth-talking, no-nothing, lying types who have squatted here for so many years”.

The tweet is seen as a direct attack on Shashi Tharoor and the Congress party.
