Mumbai: Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, will be celebrated this year on Wednesday, 30 April 2025. Observed on the third lunar day (Tritiya) of the bright half of the month of Vaishakha, this festival is considered highly favourable for new beginnings, wealth acquisition, and spiritual activities.

Known as the ‘day of eternal prosperity’, Akshaya Tritiya is a rare occasion where no specific muhurat (timing) is required to begin auspicious work — the entire day is considered shubh. Buying gold or silver, performing weddings, housewarmings, and making significant investments are particularly encouraged on this day, with the belief that actions taken on Akshaya Tritiya bring never-ending success and blessings.

When is Akshaya Tritiya in 2025?

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Tritiya tithi of Shukla Paksha in Vaishakh month will begin on 29 April at 5:31 PM and end on 30 April at 2:12 PM. Hence, Akshaya Tritiya will be observed on 30 April, aligning with traditional beliefs that consider this period spiritually potent and rewarding.

Religious and Spiritual Significance

Akshaya Tritiya is also known as Akha Teej or Kritayugadi Tritiya. It marks the beginning of the Treta Yuga, according to Hindu mythology. This sacred day is linked to the birth of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and the descent of the holy Ganga on Earth. It is also the day when Lord Krishna gave the Akshaya Patra to Yudhishthira, bestowing never-ending food and prosperity.

Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu on Akshaya Tritiya, believing that their blessings bring unending wealth and happiness into the home. It is a day when acts of charity, puja, and investment are thought to yield results that never diminish.

Why is Akshaya Tritiya Celebrated?

Mythology suggests that three incarnations of Lord Vishnu — Parashurama, Hayagriva, and Nara-Narayana — appeared on this day, further reinforcing its divine energy. It is believed to be the day when Satyug and Treta Yug began, and also marks the symbolic end of the Dwapar Yuga.

The term “Akshaya” means “never diminishing”. Thus, any good deed or spiritual practice performed on this day is believed to bring limitless rewards and lasting blessings. From marriages to business launches, everything begun on Akshaya Tritiya is said to grow manifold and remain prosperous.
