Aman Sehrawat elevates legacy of Indian wrestling at Paris Olympics with sensational bronze

New Delhi: India grappler Aman Sehrawat overpowered Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz in men’s freestyle 57kg category to bag the bronze medal in wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024. With this, India’s overall medal tally rose to 6 (5 bronze and 1 silver). Sehrawat also became the youngest Indian to win an individual medal at the Olympics.

Aman maintains India’s wrestling legacy

Aman, who dominated his opponent throughout the bout, earned the medal with a final result of 13-5. This is the first medal earned by India at wrestling at the Paris Games, an effort fully made by the 21-year-old wrestler to secure and up the legacy of Indian wrestling at the Olympic Games. Aman won the bout to keep the tradition of wrestlers returning home with a medal since 2008 Beijing Games, where Sushil Kumar had finished third.

After Sushil, Yogeshwar Dutt (2012), Sakshi Malik (2016), Ravi Dahiya and Bajrang Punia (2021) kept the tradition intact.

Meanwhile on Thursday, Aman who was a contender to give India a gold and silver, unfortunately lost the semifinal bout which shattered the hopes of Indian fans. The Indian wrestler went down against Japan’s Rei Higuchi 10-0 in the last-4 clash, which forced him to contest in the bronze medal match. The first-seed from Japan ended the bout by technical superiority inside the first three minutes.

Earlier, Aman had beaten North Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov by a 10-0 margin in his round of 16 bout earlier in the day before registering a 12-0 technical superiority win over Albania’s Zelimkhan Abakanov in the quarterfinal.
