New Delhi: Aminul Islam Bulbul has officially taken over as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), replacing Faruque Ahmed. The appointment was confirmed by BCB officials on Friday, May 30. Bulbul also assumes the role of a board director and becomes the 16th president in the board’s history.
The 57-year-old administrator emphasised his primary goal as ensuring a free and fair election scheduled for October. He told Cricbuzz, “My primary goal is to hold a transparent election and create the best cricket board. That’s it. I’m not interested in running in the next election. The government asked me, and I said yes. Now it’s just a matter of following the process.”
He added that while he has long been involved in cricket development, this is the first time he’s been offered an official role of this nature by the government.
Faruque Ahmed removed after nine months
Faruque Ahmed, who was appointed as a BCB director in August last year and elected president the same day, has now been removed after serving nine months and eight days. His removal paved the way for Bulbul’s appointment.
Previously, Bulbul was named as a government-nominated councillor to the BCB, replacing Sheikh Hamim Hasan. The National Sports Council confirmed the development in a letter dated May 29.
A historic player for Bangladesh
Aminul Islam Bulbul is a revered figure in Bangladesh cricket history. He captained the national team during the 1999 World Cup and played 13 Tests and 49 ODIs. His iconic innings of 145 against India in Bangladesh’s inaugural Test in 2000 remains one of the most significant performances in debut Test history second only to Charles Bannerman’s 165 for Australia in 1877.
After retiring from international cricket, Bulbul moved to Australia and worked with the International Cricket Council (ICC). His tenure at the ICC is set to conclude in June, clearing the path for his return to Bangladesh cricket in an administrative capacity.
