New Delhi: The highly anticipated launch of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy for the upcoming Test series between India and England has been postponed indefinitely because of the recent air crash in Ahmedabad, which led to 275 civilian deaths.
The decision to rename the Pataudi Trophy, which was held in honour of former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, was taken by the host England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which had proposed the trophy to be renamed as Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy (ATT)
“Yes, the launch of ATT Trophy (which was to be held originally on June 14) has been delayed due to the recent tragedy in Ahmedabad. It has not been cancelled. Hopefully, there will be a launch in the next few days just before the start of the series,” a BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Among the dead civilians were more than 50 British nationals. The Air India flight 171 was travelling to London and crashed within minutes of takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.
Tendulkar urges ECB, BCCI to reconsider their decision to rename Pataudi trophy
The renaming of the trophy is a tribute to the icons of world cricket – England pacer James Anderson and Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar.
The five-Test series between India and England will start on June 20 in Leeds.
It is also understood that the ECB has received a request from the BCCI to retain the Pataudi name for the series by naming an individual honour after him.
According to the sources, Tendulkar and ICC chairman Jay Shah don’t want Pataudi’s name to be removed from the marquee series due to the late cricketer’s contribution to Indian cricket.
Earlier, it was reported by Cricbuzz that Tendulkar urged the ECB and BCCI to retain the series name as the Pataudi Trophy. The report stated that Sachin spoke to the BCCI and ECB officials regarding keeping the Pataudi legacy intact.
