An auto driver from Guntur, trapped by loan apps, was manipulated into donating a kidney after he was promised Rs 30 lakh by an organ harvesting gang.
The victim named G Madhu Babu, 31, was approached by the gang in November 2023 and he took the step of donating the kidney in June 2024. Using fake documents, he underwent surgery at Vijaya Super Specialty hospital in Vijayawada.
In the seven-month period, he was reportedly paid only 1.1 lakh for hospital expenses.
Speaking to the media, Madhu Babu narrated his ordeal stating that he was approached by a man named Basha and was encouraged by the man to donate a kidney for Rs 30 lakh. “He directed me to facebook and I searched for it on FB. I clicked on the website page and found details of donation. I am O+ and my age is 31. I thought the requirements matched and wanted to go ahead with it.
I went to Vijayawada and met another man named Venkat, who acted as a mediator for the patient. After all documents and videos were arranged, I donated the kidney on June 15, 2024. After the surgery, I came to know that they removed my right kidney instead of left kidney, which was what we agreed to. They did not pay me the money either,” he stated.
Madhu Babu approached the police to nab the organ harvesting gang and said that they cheated six more people.
A similar case was reported in Visakhapatnam a few days ago and a person was duped of Rs 10 lakh. Police registered a case against a nephrologist and transplant coordinator of a private hospital.
