Ange Postecoglou asserts club management is tougher than being prime minister

New Delhi: Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has sparked an intriguing debate by claiming that managing a football team is more challenging than being a prime minister. Drawing from his own experiences in the Premier League, the Australian believes the unrelenting pressure coupled with the volatility of the job makes football management uniquely demanding.

The 59-year-old’s remark came during a season where managerial dismissals have been rampant. The recent sackings of Russell Martin at Southampton and Gary O’Neil at Wolves reflect the unforgiving nature of the profession where results dictate survival.

Postecoglou’s side ended a five-game winless streak last weekend in the Premier League as they beat bottom club Southampton 5-0. The reality of being judged every weekend is akin as he says it feels like facing an election “every weekend”.

The former Celtic FC manager faced criticism over his side’s inconsistency this season and even chose to question supporters after the defeat at the hands of Bournemouth earlier this month. On Wednesday Postecoglou said, “This job is the hardest job now in any walk of life. You can say politics, but this is harder than any job.” He added, “The tenure and longevity of this role now means that you go into it and very few are going to come out of it without any scars.”

Ange Postecoglou claims the pressure of managing Tottenham is far greater than being Prime Minister:

“He [Prime Minister] has an election what every few years? I have one every weekend, mate. We have an election every weekend and I either get voted in or out.” 😂

Pressure to deliver trophies

As Postecoglou leads Spurs into a critical Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United tonight the pressure to end the club’s trophy drought looms large. Tottenham have not won silverware since 2008 and while the manager acknowledges that lifting a trophy could boost morale, he remains focused on long-term success.

“A trophy might transform the mood temporarily,” Postecoglou remarked highlighting the need for sustainable growth rather than fleeting triumphs. His vision involves building a club capable of consistently competing for honors, even as fans grow restless for immediate results.

For the Australian, the job isn’t just about achieving success but also navigating the intense scrutiny that comes with it. As he continues to steady Tottenham’s ship Postecoglou remains steadfast in his belief that football management is one of the most demanding roles in any profession.
