New Delhi: Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou’s post-match rant about VAR dominated the headlines. Spurs thought they had equalized when Pape Sarr struck home from a distance. The celebrations followed but were abruptly halted as a time-consuming VAR check ruled out the goal.
Following their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Thursday, Postecoglou said, “It’s going to be refereed by AI soon. We might as well dispense with the players when some genius comes up with a game with no participants at some point, as referees aren’t refereeing.”
He further added that his opinion on whether it was a foul or not was irrelevant, as VAR was called in for what was supposedly a clear and obvious error. However, the check took six minutes. Postecoglou questioned how VAR is beneficial, stating, “I don’t think anyone would have complained tonight if we just went with the referees’ decisions.”

Are Spurs heading for their worst season?
After Thursday’s defeat, the 56-year-old Postecoglou became the first Spurs manager to lose his first four matches against Chelsea. Tottenham’s struggles this season paint a worrying picture, as their performances in London derbies have also been underwhelming, collecting fewer points than any of their local rivals.
With only eight matches remaining, Spurs are facing the real possibility of finishing outside the top 10 for the first time in 17 years. Their worst-ever Premier League finish remains 15th in 1994 under Ossie Ardiles, a season where survival was only confirmed in the penultimate game.
This season, Tottenham Hotspurs have already lost 16 league matches. In a 20-team Premier League, their worst record is 19 defeats from the 2003-04 campaign. Only six times in the Premier League era have they lost 16 or more matches in a season.
Spurs need 11 more points from their last eight games to avoid setting a new low for their worst-ever points tally. With a loss percentage of 53%, they haven’t endured a season this poor since 1934-35, raising concerns about their trajectory under Postecoglou.
What next?
Spurs are currently 14th in the standings and will next be in action on Sunday when they host Southampton. This will be followed by the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.
