‘Arab Spring Likely’: Russia Had Alerted Bangladesh of Danger of Destabilization

Dhaka: Russia had already flagged concerns about destabilizing Bangladesh through a statement by spokesperson of Foreign Ministry in December 2023 way before the recent developments in Bangladesh after student-led mass protests which ultimately led to ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. These protests resulted in significant loss of life and the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government. 

Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, issued a statement about the potential for destabilization in Bangladesh on 15th December 2023. She stated that USA is not satisfied with the results of the people’s vote, the attempts to further destabilize the situation in Bangladesh along the lines of the Arab Spring are likely. 

Embassy of Russia in Bangladesh also shared a post on social media platform X in December 2023 regarding the statement by Spokesperson Maria Zakharova flagging concerns about the threats. 

‘Key industries may come under attack, as well as a number of officials who, without evidence, may be accused of obstructing the democratic expression of the citizens’ will in the upcoming parliamentary elections on January 7, 2024.’ stated Spokesperson Maria Zakharova. 

Russia Accused US Ambassador of interferingin B’desh’s Internal Matters

As per the reports, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also accused US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas of grossly interfering in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.

“At the end of October, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas met a member of the local opposition to discuss plans for organising anti-government rallies. Such actions amount to nothing less than gross interference in internal affairs,” she said in a briefing in Moscow.

Unrest in Bangladesh and Ouster of Hasina

Bangladesh‘s embattled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday after a month-long student protest over reservations in government jobs leading to a situation of anarchy and unrest. Hasina landed at Hindon Airbase on the outskirts of Delhi and may seek asylum in the United Kingdom, as per reports. 

President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the Parliament which was formed after elections in January 2024. Former prime minister and political rival of Sheikh Hasina, Khaleda Zia was also freed from jail following massive protests and unrest across Bangladesh.
