New Delhi: Knee joint is crucial for maintaining mobility and overall quality of life. Our knees bear the brunt of our daily activities, from walking and running to lifting and climbing. As such, keeping our knee joints strong and healthy is essential to prevent discomfort, pain, and potential long-term damage. Dr Harish Talreja, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Jaipur, in an interaction with News9Live, revealed that avoiding following habits in daily routine will prevent damage to your knees and will prolong the life of joints.
- Avoid deep squats and kneeling for an extended time. Kneeling and squatting put 5 to 7 times your body weight on your knee.
- Avoid high heels, flip-flops, and heavy boots. High heels not only stress the small joints of your foot but also stress the knee and spine. Shoes with proper heel height and cushioning avoid stress on knee joints and reduce pain.
- High-impact activities like jumping and running on hard surfaces cause repetitive stress and increase the wear of cartilage.
- Smoking: Smoking hurts knee health. It reduces blood to joints and impairs the production of collagen necessary for cartilage production.
- Overweight: The knee joint bears significant stress during daily activities, and carrying excess weight increases this strain. For every 1 pound of weight lost, there is a 4-pound reduction in the pressure on your knees with each step you take
- Neglecting knee injury: neglected ligament and meniscus injury increase wear and tear of joints and risk early onset aging of joints.
- Avoid processed and fried food and sugary drinks.
