Are your eyes turning red due to contact lenses? Follow these 7 steps immediately

New Delhi: Do you use contact lenses regularly? Then you might be aware of the warning signs before using it. A contact lens may seem small and harmless but we need to keep in mind that an object on the surface of your eyes may cause some side effects. Contact lenses are a good alternative to glasses, especially for those with high prescription power. They are easy to use and provide a wide field of vision that may not be achievable with glasses. However, they are not without risks, as they are essentially foreign objects resting on the eye’s surface.

Dr Nita A Shah, Head – of Clinical Services, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Chembur shared with News9, “Contact lenses can lead to various eye problems, ranging from simple dryness to serious conditions such as contact lens-induced keratitis (cornea infection). Consider it a warning sign if you experience redness while wearing contact lenses. Redness may indicate overuse of contact lenses, and taking a break might resolve the issue. However, it could also signal a more serious, sight-threatening condition.”

If You Experience Redness While Using Contact Lenses, Follow These Steps Immediately:

1. Remove Lenses Safely: Clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water, then carefully remove your contact lenses.

2. Preserve Lenses for Examination: Do not discard the lenses. Instead, place them back into the contact lens case and bring the case, lenses, and cleaning solution to your ophthalmologist.

3. Suspend Use of Lenses: Avoid using contact lenses until your ophthalmologist confirms that it is safe to do so.

4. Avoid Water Exposure: Do not splash tap water into your eyes, as it may introduce microorganisms into your cornea through small abrasions caused by contact lens use.

5. Refrain from Rubbing Your Eyes: Do not rub your eyes, as this may further damage the protective barrier of your corneas.

6. Use Artificial Tears if Needed: You may use artificial tears at regular intervals, which can be purchased over the counter from a nearby pharmacy.

7. Seek Professional Medical Advice: Consult your nearest ophthalmologist immediately for a detailed eye examination and further management.
