Arshdeep Singh nominated for ICC T20I Player of the Year 2024, Jasprit Bumrah snubbed

New Delhi: Team India pacer Arshdeep Singh has been nominated for the ICC Men’s T20I Cricket of the Year award for 2024. The left-arm pacer has earned the nomination for the prestigious award after his heroics for India in their title-winning campaign at the T20 World Cup 2024 earlier this year. Arshdeep finished the tournament as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets from 18 matches at an average of 12.64 and a brilliant economy of 7.16.

ICC announced the nominations for the Men’s T20I Player of the Year 2024 on Sunday, December 29. Arshdeep was the sole Indian in the four-man shortlist as India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah failed to make the cut. Bumrah was arguably one of the best bowlers in the T20 World Cup 2024 and played a key role in India’s title triumph with 15 wickets from 8 matches.

Babar Azam, Travis Head and Sikandar Raza nominated

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam, Australian opener Travis Head and Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza are the other three players along with Arshdeep, who have been nominated for the Men’s T20I Player of the Year Award 2024. Babar, Head and Raza shone for their respective teams in T20Is in the year gone by to feature in the 4-man shortlist.

Babar managed to make the cut in the nominations despite having a mixed year with the bat. He finished as the highest run-getter for Pakistan in T20Is in 2024 with 738 runs from 24 matches at an average of 33.54 and a strike rate of over 133. He notched up six fifties in the year and closed the gap on Rohit Sharma in the list of highest run-getters of all time in T20Is.

The former Pakistan captain is just 8 runs short of surpassing Rohit Sharma’s mark of 4231 runs to become the leading run-getter of all time in T20Is. While he was the most consistent performer for Pakistan throughout the year, Babar had an underwhelming campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024 where he managed only 122 runs in 4 matches.

Head finished as the highest run-getter for Australia in T20Is in 2024 as he smashed 539 runs in 15 innings at an average of 38.50 and an impressive strike rate of 178.47, including 4 centuries. Head produced numerous match-winning performances for his teams and lit up stadiums with his extraordinary power hitting.

Raza, who slammed the second-fastest T20I hundred earlier this year, is the 4th nominee for the prestigious T20 Player of the Year Award. Raza slammed a 33-ball hundred against Gambia in October this year. He was Zimbabwe’s best player in T20Is by a distance this year with 573 runs from 23 innings at an average of 28.65 and a strike rate of 146.54. He also picked up 24 wickets from 23 matches in 2024.
