New Delhi: Ashley Cole had some bizzare comments to make stating that ‘marking Cristiano Ronaldo was the easiest of all’. There might be some truth to it as over the years, Cole had a reputation of being one of the best, if not the best fullback in the world. The English legend had this to say; “The toughest player to mark at Manchester United was Wayne Rooney. The easiest was Cristiano Ronaldo and he is aware of that.”
Cole further added; “I used to tell him before kickoff that you are in for a bad night my boy. I don’t remember him taking me on successfully. He jumped over the ball, do all the step overs but in the end I get possession back from him very quickly and easily.”
According to the English fulback, Wayne Rooney was the toughest player to mark in that Manchester United squad, he claimed; “Wayne Rooney on the other hand was very clever on possession and he didn’t do too much dribbling but he knew how to get the job done.”
Ashley Cole truly was one of his kind, maintaining his reputation of being one the best fullbacks of that time, competing against the likes of Capdevilla, Patrice Evra and Phillip Lahm. He had a wonderful career at Chelsea and Arsenal where he faced some of the best attackers of that time. Despite the pressure and the quality that attackers used to possess, the fullback was one of the most difficult defenders to beat, with his pace, and one on one defending skills.
However, if we talk abiut the ‘netizens’ trolling and supporting Cristiano Ronaldo, Cole truly was a brilliant fullback and Ronaldo himself admitted in an interview that Ashley Cole was the toughest defender he has ever faced. This justifies why Cole was rigid with what he claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo was the easiest player to mark in that Manchester United squad, according to him.
