Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav to boost Northeast crafts, targeting Rs 30 million in sales

New Delhi: Delhi is set to host the inaugural Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav, a three-day extravaganza (December 6-8) celebrating the rich cultural heritage and economic potential of Northeast India.

Organised by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), this event aims to commercially showcase the region’s diverse crafts, art, culture, and agricultural products, with the ambitious goal of generating a substantial business turnover. The festival, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be held at Bharat Mandapam.

The Mahotsav’s centrepiece will be eight state pavilions, each featuring 40 grassroots artisans and farmers showcasing their unique products. A rural haat bazaar will further amplify this focus, providing a platform for 320 artisans to connect directly with buyers. The anticipated business turnover is projected at Rs 20 million from pavilion sales and another Rs 10 million from a buyer-seller meet facilitating direct interaction between 40 buyers and 50 artisans.

The event will highlight 33 GI-tagged products, aiming to bridge the gap between rural craftsmanship and the global market. Two dedicated exhibitions will spotlight the exquisite Muga and Eri silk, integral to the region’s textile industry. Music enthusiasts can enjoy three evenings of live performances, culminating in a performance by the renowned Shillong Chamber Choir. The festival will also feature the participation of the chief ministers of all Northeastern states.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasised the festival’s significance in portraying Northeast India as both a cultural treasure trove and an economic powerhouse, highlighting its vital role in India’s overall development narrative.

Scindia further announced plans for a Northeast investor summit in Delhi next April-May, building upon already-signed MoUs worth Rs 9,500 crore. The government is prepared to facilitate roadshows in foreign countries to attract further investment, emphasizing the region’s potential for global growth.“The importance of this region will be showcased not just at the national level, but globally, which our government sees as the engine of India’s growth story,” Scindia said.

Beyond the commercial aspects, the Mahotsav will feature immersive virtual reality experiences showcasing the region’s history and traditions. Technical sessions will delve into sustainable development strategies, while a fashion show will present eco-friendly designs inspired by traditional elements. A commemorative postage stamp will be released to mark this important event.
