New Delhi: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who is in Davos to attend the World Economic Forum, engaged in a discussion over Indian economy’s growth with Shobana Kamineni, the executive vice-chairperson of Apollo Hospitals, Sanjiv Bajaj, Chairman and Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv, and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, DP World.

In the panel discussion, Vaishnaw mentioned that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is focussed on building and improving the infrastructure of the country starting from colleges to roads and railways. The Union Minister mentioned that India has emerged as the third largest start-up hub worldwide and has over 100+ Unicorns.

He said that the government continues to focus on expanding both the services and the manufacturing industries. He also emphasised on Modi government’s inclusive growth, saying that in the last 10 years, 510 million bank accounts were opened, 130 million households got tap water connections, and 110 million households received cooking gas connections.

Make in India, Made for the World

Vaishnaw pointed out that the government has also worked on simplification of laws which has benefitted sectors like telecom significantly. He added that the Indian economy has been growing at 6-8 per cent in the last few years and assured that the government is focussed on attaining the 8 per cent growth rate.

Commenting on the robust population of the country and the positives of it, he said India has abundant talent. He believes PM Modi’s foreign and economic policies have helped build the trust factor of India among the international community. He cited the example of global semi-conductor manufacturing companies setting up plants in India to put forward his point.

The Union Minister also said simplification of tariffs is the main agenda of the Modi government, which also aligns with the ‘Make in India Made for the world’ strategy. 

Vaishnaw said the government has been focussing on skilling too. As an example, he cited the ‘Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya’, adding that around 15,000 aeronautical engineers will soon pass out from the institution. He further informed that the government has introduced several new courses in colleges, universities, and ITIs which will help the youth to get knowledge of semiconductors, 5G and other new sectors.

 At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted India’s robust economic growth, driven by infrastructure development, a booming start-up ecosystem, and government initiatives promoting inclusive growth. He emphasised that the PM Modi led government is focussed on simplifying laws, expanding manufacturing, and skilling the workforce through initiatives like Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya.
