Asian Championships: Sprinter Animesh breaks national record to bag men’s 200m bronze

New Delhi: Indian sprinter Animesh Kujur and Vithya Ramraj earned a bronze medal each in the men’s 200m final and women’s 400m hurdles respectively at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships on Saturday. Animesh delivered a very strong performance in the men’s 200m final to set a new national record of 20.32 seconds to win the bronze medal.

With the record, the 21-year-old sprinter bettered his previous mark of 20.40s which was set earlier in the year at the National Federation Senior Athletics Competition. Meanwhile, Towa Uzawa, from Japan, clinched the gold medal with a time of 20.12s while Abdulaziz Abdu I Atafi of Saudi Arabia claimed the silver medal with a time of 20.13s.

Vithya secures bronze in women’s hurdles

On the other hand in the women’s 400m hurdles, Vithya, who is an Asian Games medallist, claimed India’s second bronze medal of the day by clocking 56.46s to finish on the podium. This is the 26-year-old Tamil Nadu sprinter’s second feat in recent times.

Meanwhile, Mo Jiadie from China claimed the elusive gold medal in 55.31s edging past Bahrain’s Oluwakemi Adekoya, who finished in 55.32s. Another Indian in the race, Anu Raghavan was placed seventh with a time of 57.46s.

In the women’s 200m final, Jyoti Yarraji finished fifth with a time of 23.47s, while Nithya Gandhe came seventh in 23.90s. Yarraji had won gold in the women’s 100m hurdles earlier in the week.
