New Delhi: Ashwatthama is one of the most controversial and mysterious characters of the Mahabharata. He is the son of Drona, the teacher who made the Pandavas and the Kauravas the warrior they are. In the epic, he is the friend of the eldest Kaurava, Duryodhana and Drona trained him in warfare along with the Kauravas and the Pandavas. During the Kurukshetra War, he fought for the Kauravas against the Pandavas. A great warrior, Ashwatthama was feared by all for his deadly battle skills. Then why did ‘Maharathi’ disappear from the face of society?
Why did Ashwatthama disappear?
No, Ashwatthama did not disappear. Rather, he was banished by Lord Krishna due to a heinous crime that he committed at the end of the war. During the war, Krishna hatched a plan to kill the indomitable Drona who was threatening to take the Kauravas to victory. As per the plan, Yudhishthira falsely took the name of Ashwatthama as if he was killed (it was an elephant of the same name), distracted Drona and the great warrior-teacher was killed.
After he learnt of the deceptive way his father was killed, Ashwatthama invoked the Narayanastra against the Pandavas but thanks to Krishna, the weapons passed by harmless. Following the death of many great warriors and kings and a vast number of common soldiers, the war ended with the victory of the Pandavas. But Ashwatthama, still angry, swore revenge on behalf of Duryodhana on the Pandavas. It would result in chaos.
Along with Kripa and Kritavarma, Ashwatthama plans to attack the Pandava camp at night. In that mission, he killed Dhrishtadyumna, and other warriors, and also slaughtered the five sons of the Pandavas, mistaking them to be the actual five brothers. When Arjuna came for revenge, Ashwatthama fired his Bramhshirastra to which Arjuna retaliated with his own Bramhshirastra. While the latter managed to withdraw his weapon at the last stage, Ashwatthama did not know how to do that and redirected it to the womb of the pregnant Uttara in an attempt to end the lineage of the Pandavas.
Krishna saved the unborn child and Ashwatthama had to surrender the gem on his forehead. Krishna cursed him for trying to kill an unborn child that he would roam in the forests until the end of the Kali Yuga with blood and pus oozing out of his injuries and cry for death, but he would live. Aswatthama went to the forest and was never seen again. While there have been many claims over the years of people spotting the cursed warrior, all of those claims have turned out to be baseless.
