New Delhi: Fifty-six year-old powerlifter from Gujarat, Lalit Patel scripted history, after he clinched three gold medals at the IBBF World Powerlifting Championship being held in Pattaya, Thailand. Lalit, who was competing in the Master Two category (83-93kg) topped the podium in the bench press and squat events.
The bench press category and squat events in the competition were held between May 10 and 12 where the Gujarat man stood on an entirely different level as compared to the other participants. As per a report in news agency PTI, Patel had been training intensely for the last eight months to prepare for the big-stage event. The powerlifter took to the sport at just five years of age and surprisingly, follows a strict vegetarian diet.
Age no barrier to success: Patel
Lalit Patel has said that age and diet are no barriers to success and it can be achieved at any level with passion and persistent hard work. He proved it right by attaining immense success at 56 years of age. Over the last few years, the Indian powerlifter has bagged 16 district-level, 18 state-level and 12 national-level medals.
After achieving the memorable milestone, his dream is to guide and support young athletes in the country and further explore competitive bodybuilding.
