New Delhi: World Cup hero Suryakumar Yadav, who was also appointed as the new skipper of Team India in the T20Is, has said that his relationship with Gautam Gambhir is “special”. Gambhir currently works on his first assignment as the new head coach of the Indian team which is on a Sri Lanka tour for a six-match white-ball series. Both SKY and Gautam Gambhir share a rich history with each other and are expected to take Indian cricket to newer heights in the T20Is.
Suryakumar pipped Hardik Pandya to take charge of the T20I captaincy after the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the format. His first assignment is the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka that begins on July 27. On the sidelines of the series opener, SKY looked back at his relationship with Gautam Gambhir and also said that he has enjoyed being a leader on the field despite not being the captain and has learned the skill from different skippers over the years.
Indian cricket has begun a new era under SKY and new head coach Gambhir and the camaraderie they both share is enriching, right from the days when they played for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The new captain described his relationship with Gambhir as both special and strong.
“This relationship is special because in 2014 I played under him in KKR. It was special because from there only I got opportunities. The relationship is still strong. He (Gambhir) knows how I work, what is my mindset when I come to practice. I also know how he tries to work as a coach. It’s all about the lovely relationship we have and very excited to see how it goes forward,” the flamboyant batter said in a video posted by the BCCI.
