New Delhi: Australia picked two uncapped players in their 13-member squad for the first Test against India. Nathan McSweeney and white-ball star Josh Inglis were drafted into the squad for the game that will begin on November 22 in Perth.
India travel to Australia for a five-match Test series for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Both teams are in contention for a place in the World Test Championship final, as they currently occupy the top two places in the standings.
Right hander McSweeney is set to make his debut as opener while Inglis’ inclusion is viewed as a surprise inclusion.
He was impressive for Australia A in their recent clash against India A and was backed by former skipper Ricky Ponting to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order.
McSweeney’s inclusion paves the way for Steve Smith to return to his usual No.4 position after batting as an opener after the retirement of David Warner without much success.
Marnus Labuschagne will continue as the No.3 batter while Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and keeper Alex Carey complete the middle-order.
The bowling department consists of usual named with Scott Boland being the back-up pacer to skipper Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood while the spin-bowling section will be led by veteran offie Nathan Lyon.
Cricket Australia’s selection committee chairman George Bailey said they have picked a well balanced squad and hopes McSweeney will live up to the expectations.
“Nathan has displayed the attributes we believe will equip him well for Test cricket along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket,” Bailey said, as quoted by the icc-cricket.com.
“His performances for South Australia and Australia A weighed in his favour and supports our view he is ready for the opportunity at Test level.
“Similarly, Josh has been in great touch in the Sheffield Shield competition and deserves his place in his first Test squad.
“Scott has been a top-level performer when given the opportunity at Test level and remains a valued member of the squad.
“The squad is balanced and provides Andrew and Pat the options required for what shapes as a captivating series.”
