New Delhi: Spanish ace Carlos Alcaraz battled past Nuno Borges in four sets, while Alexander Zverev cruised into the 4th round of the Australian Open with a comfortable win over Jacob Fearnley on Day 6 of the season’s first Grand Slam tournament.
Chasing a career grand slam at the 2025 Australian Open, Alcaraz was tested by a spirited Borges, who rattled some nerves in the Alacaraz camp by winning the third set. However, the Spaniard recovered to claim the fourth set and the match 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 to progress to the fourth round.
Alacarz raises his game at a crucial time
Alcaraz twice broke Borges’ serve and sealed the first set 6-2 in 31 minutes. Borges upped the ante in the second set and went toe-to-toe with Alcaraz to go level at 4-4. However, Borges made two unforced errors in Game 9 as the third seed broke the serve and secured the set 6-4.
The third set saw another intense battle between the two players who held their serves, pushing the set into a tiebreaker. Surprisingly, Alcaraz committed several unforced errors, as Borges took advantage and took the lead to win the set 7-6.
Alcaraz raised the tempo in the fourth set and quickly raced to a 3-0 lead, which proved to be too much for Borges. Alcaraz will next take on either Jack Draper or Aleksandar Vukic in the next round.
Zverev cruises into Round of 16
Meanwhile, Zverv progressed to the Round of 16 with a comfortable straight-sets win over world no. 92 Jacob Fearnley. The world no. 2 was at his clinical best against the British player, securing a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory to maintain his flawless run without dropping a set.
Earlier, 12th seed Tommy Paul cruised past Roberto Carballes Baena after a battle of an opening set, winning 7-6, (7-0) 6-2, 6-0.
In women’s singles, 11th seed Paula Badosa battled past Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 4-6, 6- 3 to advance to the next round. The Spanish player now awaits the winner of Olga Danilovic and seventh seed Jessica Pegula.
