New Delhi: French tennis player Gael Monfils continued his stupendous run in the Australian Open 2025, the first grand slam event of the year. The 38-year-old stunned fourth seed Taylor Fritz of the United States in the third round of the men’s singles event with the score line of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/1), 6–4 in a match which lasted for three hours and eight minutes at the Margaret Court Arena.

Monfils aced 24 aces against the American to muster his eighth consecutive win this season. Monfils made a third set tie-break and secured the important break point at 4-4. Fritz was tempted to play at the net in a bid to gain the advantage. The impeccable groundstrokes and incisive serves was what kept the senior player ahead of Fritz, who has just lost eight games in his previous two matches.

Monfils became the second oldest player to reach the Round of 16 of the Australian Open since the tournament was shifted to the Melbourne Park in 1988. Roger Federer reached the Round of 16 in the 2020 edition when he played Novak Djokovic in the final that season.

Monfils won the Auckland Open after defeating Zizou Bergs in straight sets with identical scores of 6-3, 6-3 to become the oldest man in nearly five decades to clinch an ATP-tour level trophy.

Alex de Minaur wins against seeded opponent for first time in Australian Open

Australian player Alex de Minaur made a remarkable come-from-behind victory against 31st seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 5-7, 7-6, (3), 6-3, 6-3 to make it to the fourth round of the Australian Open for the fourth straight year in a row. However, this was the first time that the Sydney-born tennis player defeated a seeded opponent.

De Minaur will next face Alex Michelsen of America in the Round of 16. The Aussie could play reigning champion Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinal if both players progress.
