Australian school introduces cricket as formal subject

New Delhi: Cricket has been a significant part of the Australian culture and their sports history. Australia and England played the inaugural Test match in 1877 after that the Aussies achieved many big milestones in cricket. The two sides will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Test cricket in a one-off Test match in 2027 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Australia have dominated World cricket with six ODI World Cup wins, a T20 World Cup title, and a World Test Championship under its belt. Despite the success of cricket in Australia, Victoria’s Lara Secondary College has decided to integrate the sport as a primary subject into its curriculum.

As per the report by ABC Sports, The school became the first to introduce cricket as a formal subject rather than a mere extracurricular activity. The school will provide cricket-focused electives for 9th and 10th-grade students and certificates in Sports and Recreation for 11th and 12th-grade students. Additionally, special cricket training will be provided to the students.

Students will engage in many curriculums covering key areas while working towards their certification in Sports and Recreation such as coaching, umpiring, sports psychology, sports strapping and first aid.

Impact of cricket as a subject

Teamwork and Cooperation: Cricket as a sport is all about teamwork and cooperation and it will help students to improve their communication skills and they will learn about the teamwork.

Sportsmanship and leadership: Cricket is a team sport and it teaches players to respect their opponents and umpires. Leading the team and taking responsibility also improve leadership qualities.

Discipline and Time Management: Cricket requires discipline and players need to follow the rules. It also teaches time management which helps in greater aspects of life.
