‘Awesome to watch’: Harry Brook best cricketer at the moment, opines Joe Root

New Delhi: Joe Root is convinced his England team-mate Harry Brook is the world-leading cricketer at the moment after seeing the all-rounder score back-to-back centuries in successive Tests in their ongoing Test series against New Zealand.

Brook struck 171 runs in the first Test at Christchurch, following it up with 123 in the second game at Wellington as England won both the matches to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Brook’s pivotal innings in both the matches were highly praised by Root, who himself scored his 36th ton in the second game. Right hander Brook scored his eighth Test hundred at Basin Reserve, in only his 23 match since making his debut in September 2022.

It was also the 25-year-old’s third hundred in the season, after a 317-run knock in Multan during England’s tour of Pakistan.

“Brookie is by far and away the best player in the world at the minute… He’s awesome to watch. He can absorb pressure, apply it, and play shots all around the wicket. Whether it’s whacking it for six or scooping over the head, he does it all with ease.”

England’s key player

Brook’s form has been pivotal for England in red-ball cricket. his hot form has seen him rise to the second spot (854 points) in the batting rankings, that is led by Root (895 points).

Together they have scored 1,779 runs at an average of 77.34. Brook’s has amassed 2,280 runs in 23 matches, scoring more than any English batter in their first 23 Tests.

He averages 61.62, which is the third in history among batters with at least 20 innings, behind only Don Bradman and Adam Voges.

Root is regarded among the modern top bracket of Test batters. He believes Brook is among the best players in the new generation of top players that includes India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra.
