On September 11, 2024 the Centre made a significant move in the social welfare scheme in the health sector – it flagged off a major expansion programme of the already popular Ayushman Bharat Yojana by announcing that “all senior citizens aged 70 and above” will be given health coverage, irrespective of their income.
According to the government announcement, even if a senior citizen above 70 years is already covered by the scheme, he/she will be entitled to an additional top-up of up to Rs 5 lakh a year. The beneficiary will not have to share it with any other member of the family who could be below 60.
Ayushman Bharat apply online
There is an effortless way of enrolling for the scheme. Here are the steps. One should visit the PMJAY portal and first try to know whether he/she is eligible for the service. Accordingly, one needs to select the tab “Am I Eligible”. The next step involves typing in the OPT sent to your mobile number.
Once this basic step is done, the applicant has to choose his/her state and the scheme. The applicant has to enter the website https://ayushmanup.in/ tab and register himself/herself by clicking ‘# Register Yourself on SETU. (The Setu portal forms a part of the Ayushman Bharat website. It provides the way to apply for an Ayushman Bharat card.) Now the applicant needs to register himself/herself. The process will involve filling in all the tabs and then clicking “Submit”.
Wait for a nod
If the registration process is accomplished successfully, the applicant needs to move to the KYC step. The applicant has to wait for the nod from the authorities after the KYC process is completed.
Only after the authorities approve the KYC, will the card be generated. Once this signal is received, the applicant has to go to ‘Download Ayushman Card’. AT this step, the Aadhaar Card number has to be typed in as well an OTP sent to the applicant.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme is funded by the Centre and is designed to provide healthcare facilities to citizens. The benefits that this programme include hospitalisation of secondary and tertiary care up to Rs 5 lakhs per family each year. It also ensures cashless services. It also involves hardly any paperwork.
