New Delhi: Raphael Varane is reportedly considering retirement from football after his latest injury. He is currently playing for newly-promoted Italian side Como. The 31-year-old left Manchester United as a free agent after his contract expired this summer.
The 2018 World Cup winner made 95 appearances for the Red Devils before announcing his decision to leave the club in May this year. He made his debut for Coma in their Coppa Italia match against Sampdoria last month but was forced off just after 20 minutes due to an injury.
Despite many expectations of leading the Italian club’s defence this season, the recurring injuries have complicated his registration in the league. During his three years at Manchester United, he suffered many injuries and missed many matches for Erik Ten Hag’s side. But under the guidance of Cesc Fábregas, his move to Italy seemed to offer him a new opportunity to revive his career. But injuries have continued to haunt the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player.
Varane close terminating his contract
As per the Le Parisien report, the French centre-back is close to terminating his contract with Como and could even make an announcement in the next few hours. He made his professional football debut 14 years ago and won four Champions League titles with Real Madrid. After that, he moved to Manchester United and scored 5 goals in 95 matches he played for the English club and also won two trophies.
After his selection in the national side in 2013, Varane became the best central defender for his team and one of the best players in the world at the position. After the injury disappointment in the 2016 Euro Cup, he won the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France in Russia and also came close to the feat again in Qatar 4 years later.
