Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is considering reviewing and potentially scrapping the Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) signed with India if they are found to be unfavorable for the country, Foreign Affairs Minister Touhid Hossain stated on Sunday.
According to sources, the new government believes that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was particularly close to India and may have granted undue favors while signing the MoUs.
There has been no official communication regarding the review of these agreements. The Indian government anticipates that the new administration in Bangladesh will present a different perspective as it evolves.
Regarding Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following her ouster on August 5, Hossain indicated that Bangladesh would seek her extradition if necessary. Previously, Hossain mentioned that Bangladesh would request her extradition to India due to the cases filed against her and because her Red Passport has been canceled.
The Indian government would consider handing over Hasina only upon receiving an official request.
In June 2024, the Sheikh Hasina administration signed 10 MoUs with India, including seven new agreements and three renewals, following delegation-level talks at the Hyderabad House during Hasina’s two-day state visit to India.
