Dhaka: Amid the political unrest in Bangladesh, the United States on Monday said that it is closely monitoring the situation in Dhaka and has urged all the parties to refrain from further instigating violence.
US State Department remained tight-lipped on the departure of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from her country, however, it welcomed the announcement of the formation of a new interim government in Dhaka.
“We have seen the announcement that Prime Minister Hasina has resigned from her position and departed Bangladesh. We are monitoring the situation carefully. The United States stands with the people of Bangladesh. We urge all parties to refrain from further violence. Too many lives have been lost over the past several weeks, and we urge calm and restraint in the days ahead. We welcome the announcement of the interim government and urge any transition be conducted in accordance with Bangladesh’s laws,” said US State Department Spokesperson, Matthew Miller.
US Express Grief over Loss of Lives During Protests
“We are deeply saddened about the reports of Human Rights abuses, casualties and injuries over the weekend in the past weeks,” he said.
Focussed on Supporting End To Violence
Miller said that decisions regarding formation of interim government should reflect aspirations of Bangladeshi people.
“Our condolences of course go out to those who have been hurt in the violence over the past few weeks. We are focused now on supporting an end to the violence and for accountability. All decisions regarding the interim government should be made with respect to democratic principles, the rule of law and the will of the Bangladeshi people,” he said.
More than 300 people have been killed in Bangladesh since the protests demanding the removal of quota in jobs for descendants of those who participated in the 1971 liberation war began.
Sheikh Hasina Arrives In India After Fleeing From Bangladesh
Sheikh Hasina, who arrived in India on Monday evening after tendering her resignation in the wake of mounting protests, held discussions with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad on the present situation in Bangladesh and her future course of action, sources said.
Earlier in the day, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met on Monday at Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg. In the meeting, PM Modi was briefed about the situation in Bangladesh. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman were present in the meeting. Senior officials were also present.
BNP congratulates Students For Hasina’s Exit
Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, on Monday, congratulated the students and protesters from all over the country on Sheikh Hasina’s resignation from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Rahman said that the protesters’ sense of justice and love for their fellow country people have prevailed on this “historic day”.
Agitators also set on fire Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s office at 3/A Dhanmondi in Dhaka. Protesters were seen chanting slogans and celebrating the news of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
