The U.S. Supreme Court declined Missouri’s request to halt Donald Trump‘s upcoming sentencing in New York for felony charges related to hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels. The decision, made on Monday, also allowed a gag order on Trump to remain until after the November 5 presidential election.
Missouri argued that the case against Trump violated voters’ rights under the U.S. Constitution by limiting the Republican nominee’s ability to communicate with the public as he campaigns for the White House. However, the Supreme Court’s unsigned order rejected this claim. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito indicated they would have granted Missouri’s request to hear the case.
Trump was convicted in May of falsifying business records to cover up a $130,000 payment to Daniels, aimed at securing her silence about an alleged sexual encounter before the 2016 election. Prosecutors asserted the payment was intended to bolster Trump’s 2016 presidential bid, which he won against Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Trump, who denies the encounter with Daniels, plans to appeal his conviction after sentencing, scheduled for September. Missouri’s Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey initiated a lawsuit on July 3 against New York state, seeking Supreme Court intervention to pause Trump’s sentencing and challenge the gag order imposed by Judge Juan Merchan.
