Bangladesh President Dissolves Parliament, Orders Khaledsa’s Release, India Watches Closely

 All-party meeting underway in the Parliament on the issue of Bangladesh. EAM Dr S Jaishankar briefs the members of different political parties.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly has said as a country committed to democracy, inclusive governance and the rule of law, Canada calls for a “quick and peaceful” return to a democratic and inclusive civilian-led government in Bangladesh.

“We urge the people of Bangladesh to unite around the principles of freedom and democracy upon which their country was founded,” said the minister in a statement following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina from the post of prime minister.

Five people, including two policemen, were reported killed following attacks and arson at Sonaimuri and Chatkhil police stations in Noakhali on Monday.

In the wake of growing unrest in Bangladesh, an ISKCON centre in Meherpur, located in Khulna division, has been set on fire. The incident has destroyed the temple including the holy deities of Lord Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra Devi.

Centre calls for all party meeting on B’desh in Parliament at 10AM, in which EAM Dr Jaishankar will brief the leaders of all the political parties. 

Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, EAM Jaishankar, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will be present in the meeting. 

Miscreants attacked, vandalised and set fire to at least six police stations in Chittagong, looting weapons, bullets and various equipment. In addition, Awami League leaders and activists’ homes and officers were targeted, Dhaka Tribune reported.

After the report of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, agitated crowds have taken to the streets in celebration. Later, police stations in Chandgaon, Patenga, EPZ, Kotowali, Akbar Shah, and Pahartali under the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) were attacked, vandalised, and set on fire.  

Miscreants stormed into the Sherpur District Jail, allowing 500 inmates to flee from the jail.

A mob equipped with sticks and local weapons brought out a procession amid curfew on Monday afternoon. 

Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus will be the chief adviser to the interim government in Bangladesh, the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced on Tuesday.

In a video posted on social media early Tuesday morning, Nahid Islam, one of the key coordinators of the movement, said that Prof Yunus has agreed to take on this crucial responsibility at the call of the student community to save the country, the Daily Star newspaper reported.

Bangladesh Army is tracing those involved in looting and vandalising state property, some arrested, as per the Reports.

To ensure the safety and security of minority communities across Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Army has released a comprehensive list of emergency contact numbers. These contacts are designated to assist Hindu families, temples (mandirs), and other minority groups in case of violent attacks or any form of danger.

Hasina, 76, who fled Bangladesh following month long massive and deadly anti-government protests across the country, is seeking an asylum in the UK. Hasina’s sister Rehana, who hold a UK citizenship, is also accompanying the embattled leader. According to the sources, no confirmation from the UK regarding political asylum for Hasina has been received so far.

Rehana is the younger daughter of ‘father of Bangladesh’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib and the younger sister of Sheikh Hasina. Rehana’s daughter Tulip Siddiq is a member of the British Parliament for the Labor Party.

Amid the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh after the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, West Bengal Police urged people to avoid sharing provocative videos.

In a post on X, West Bengal Police wrote, “Given the current situation in neighbouring Bangladesh, we have noticed a few posts and videos on social media that may create discord and unrest. Please do not pay attention to rumours, do not share provocative videos, do not step into a fake news trap…”

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said his mother would not make a political comeback as she is “deeply disappointed” by the uprising against her leadership despite her efforts for the betterment of Bangladesh, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Temples,  Churches and Buddhist Pagodas step up to protect minorities amidst administrative shortcomings due to ongoing violence in Bangladesh

The Minorities Unity Council of Bangladesh has released contact information for leaders of Mandirs, churches, and Buddhist temples. Members of the Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian communities are encouraged to reach out to these leaders and report any incidents of unrest or violence.

Bangladesh’s Embattled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday after month-long students protest over reservations in government jobs. Hasina landed at Hindon Airbase on the outskirts of Delhi and may seek asylum in the United Kingdom.
