New Delhi: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Bangladesh would put up a strong fight against them in a two match Test series that begins from September 19 after winning in Pakistan.
Bangladesh defeated Pakistan 2-0 in a two-match Test series recently and have landed in India for the first match that will be played in Chennai followed by the second game in Kanpur from September 27.
It was Bangladesh’s first series win over Pakistan and winning away from home will make them extremely confident of their chances in India, Gavaskar noted.
The former opener added Rohit Sharma’s boys have a task in hand and can’t take the Bangla boys lightly as they have show what they can do against Pakistan.
“By beating Pakistan in both the Test matches played in Pakistan, the Bangladesh team have shown that they are a force to reckon with. Even a couple of years back, when India toured Bangladesh, they were given a good fight by the Bangladeshis.
“Now with the series win against Pakistan under their belt, they are primed to take on India too,” Gavaskar said through his column for Mid-Day.
Bangladesh chase history
Gavaskar praised the aggressive mentality Najimul Shanto’s men that they displayed in abundance to leave Pakistan stunned.
“They have some fine players in their ranks and some new promising players who no longer have the awe of the opposition that seemed to characterise their early forays into the international game.
“Now, every team that play them know they can’t put their guard down as they could be knocked down as the Pakistanis found out. It will certainly be a series to look forward to,” he further wrote.
Having lost 11 of their 13 matches to India, Bangladesh will be chasing their first win in the five-day format. They have drawn two matches and came close to a win in the last Test played between the two teams in Dhaka in December 2022.
They will thus be eager to create history when the series begins at the Chepauk stadium in Chennai.
