Dhaka: As many as six police stations in Bangladesh’s Chittagong were set on fire after miscreants attacked and vandalised the police offices and looted weapons, bullets and various equipment.
Police stations in Chandgaon, Patenga, EPZ, Kotowali, Akbar Shah, and Pahartali under the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) were attacked, vandalised, and set on fire, ANI reported quoting Dhaka Tribune.
The incident occurred at around 5 pm when hundreds of attackers tried to breach the main gate of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Lines in Dampara. In response to this, police personnel fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the attackers.
However, the agitated crowd started pelting bricks at the police commissioner’s office.
In another incident, protesters also attacked Chittagong Central Jail in the Laldighi area where the prison guards fired from inside to disperse the miscreants.
Furthermore, the residence of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury was targeted and set on fire after reports of the Hasina-led government fall. The Jubo League leader Helal Akbar Babar’s house was also attacked, according to the Bangladesh-based media.
The CCC ward number 10 Councilor Nichar Uddin Manju’s residence also came under attack. He then rushed to the roof and apologised to the protesters. however, the attackers ransacked his residence and left.
People from all walks of life marched towards Chittagong and distributed sweets in celebration after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday evening following massive protests across the country over the controversial “government job quota.”
A joyous procession began at 3 pm (local time), spreading through Muradpur, Agrabad, Dewanhat, Chowkbazar, GEC, Sholshahar, Kazir Dewri, Jamalkhan, Bahaddarhat, and every part of the city, the report said.
