New Delhi: Bangladesh’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Wednesday, March 5. The announcement came a week after Bangladesh’s exit from the Champions Trophy 2025. The Bangla Tigers didn’t manage to win a single match in the group stage. They lost two out of their three matches, and their last game against hosts Pakistan was abandoned due to rain in Rawalpindi.
Mushfiqur finishes his career as Bangladesh’s second-highest ODI run-scorer with 7795 runs in 275 matches at an average of 36.42, including nine centuries and 49 fifties. He is one of only five wicketkeepers to play more than 250 ODI matches, and his seven hundreds are the fourth-most by a wicketkeeper, behind only Kumar Sangakkara, Adam Gilchrist and MS Dhoni.
The Bangladesh veteran has been in the spotlight in recent times due to his poor form, but he came under more criticism during the Champions Trophy 2025. He got out for a golden duck against India in the tournament opener and managed to score just 2 runs against New Zealand. His last half-century in ODI cricket was against Sri Lanka in March last year. Mushfiqur was injured for two ODI matches against Afghanistan in November and the West Indies tour in November and December.
Mushfiqur made his first mark in the 2007 World Cup when he scored fifty in the famous win against India in Trinidad. He was picked in the team ahead of the veteran Khaled Mashud. He quickly became one of the main batters in the middle-order.
The wicketkeeper batter also holds the record for most consecutive ODIs for Bangladesh, having participated in 92 matches between 2010 and 2016. He announced his retirement from T20I cricket after the 2022 T20 World Cup. He has played 94 Test matches and is in line to become the first Bangladeshi cricketer to reach the 100-Test milestone.

Mushfiqur announced his retirement from the ODI format on his official Facebook page. He wrote that their achievements may have been limited on a global stage, but whenever he stepped onto the field for the country, he gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty.
“The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny. Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years” Mushfiqur wrote.
