New Delhi: World champion D Gukesh’s dreams of winning a maiden Norway Chess title were crushed when American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana defeated him in the final round of the tournament in Stavanger on Friday. Gukesh committed a costly blunder in the clash, which got him a third-place finish in the marquee event as he saw five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen clinch a record-extending seventh Norway Chess title.
The 2018 Norway Chess champion Caruana had put Gukesh in a disadvantageous position, and the Indian grandmaster tried to stage a late comeback as he had rescued a draw, but ran out of time and committed a blunder, instantly realising his chances had slipped away. As the game ended, Gukesh offered a handshake while having a gloomy look, closed his eyes, and buried his face in both hands in heartbreak.
