New Delhi: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday revealed that its senior women bowler Jahanara Alam has decided to take a break from the game of cricket for an indefinite period to focus on mental health issues. She has played 83 T20 Internationals and 52 One Day Internationals for the women’s national team till date.
The fast bowler wrote a letter to the country’s national cricket body, informing about the decision to stay out of the game for at least two months, though there is no specified time frame for her return. BCB’s women wing-in charge Habibul Bashar confirmed the development.
“She (Jahanara) had given us a letter stating that she was not mentally ready to play and took a break from cricket for two months. She even said that if necessary, she should not be kept in the contract,” Bashar told Cricbuzz.
“We need to respect that because if someone feels that she is not mentally ready and wants to take a break for some days, we need to accept that. There is no specific time frame for which she is out. Whenever she feels well, she will let us know,” he added.
Jahanara’s last appearance in an international game for Bangladesh was made on December 9, 2024, during the third T20I match against Ireland in Sylhet. She claimed a couple of wickets in the three-match series at an average of 38 and an economy rate of 7.60. She was part of Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup squad in the UAE last year but warmed the bench throughout the tournament.
