Kolkata: Despite the proliferation of ATMs (automated teller machine) and online and digital bank, many people still visit the branch of a bank for business. For example, if you want demand draft to be made, you could order it digitally through an app if you are the customer of a tech-savvy bank, but you have to visit its branch to take delivery of it. Therefore, one has to know whether banks will be closed on a Saturday.

Banks in India are closed for business on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month and they open for business on first and third Saturdays. Needless to mention that banks are closed on all Sundays of all months. Since May 10 is the second Saturday of May 2025, all branches of all banks will be closed for business.

Negotiable Instruments Act

Therefore, no customer of any bank can step into any branch of any bank to get any work done. By the way, Reserve Bank of India has three types of holidays for banks. One, those under the Negotiable Instruments Act, two, those under Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and third, those for closing of accounts. The practice of observing holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays are holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Incidentally, banks are not closed in India on account of the heightened tension due to escalation of conflict along the India-Pakistan border and heightened alert in states such as Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Banks were also open when mock drills were conducted across the country against the backdrop of the escalating geopolitical tension.

One third of the month of May is already behind us. However, it is important to know what are the banking holidays left in May. The following is a list of the holidays remaining in May:

May 12 (Monday, Buddha Purnima): Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttarakhand, West Bengal

May 16 (Friday, State Day): Sikkim

May 23 (Friday, Buddha Purnima): Assam, Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi

May 26 (Monday, Kazi Nazrul Islam Jayanti): Tripura

May 29 (Thursday, Maharana Pratap Jayanti): Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan
