Battling climate change: Effective ways we can follow to save Earth’s environment

New Delhi: The Earth is our planet, our home. And as is the norm, it is our responsibility to take care of this giant home. Sadly, over the years, a rise in pollution has greatly affected the environment of this planet, so much so that now the twin threats of climate change and global warming are pushing the existence of life on this planet to increase uncertainty. Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 to make people aware of the importance of protecting the environment and making this planet a better place to live in.

What can we do to protect the environment?

Protecting the environment is not a massively time-consuming and energy-draining task. There are some simple ways in which we can protect the environment.

Less consumption

Reducing our consumption can massively affect the environment. If we reduce, reuse and recycle and aim to reduce trash, then we can save the planet from pollution in a big way. Reusing enables items which are not needed by us to not go into the trash. It can save us money and reduce the amount of clutter in our homes.

Let it rot

Always allow your yard waste and food waste to rot naturally in the soil instead of sending it to the landfill and the former process is known as compost. It helps to keep the trash out of the waste stream and makes the soil rich. Some cities now pick up organic waste alongside regular trash and recycling pick-up.

Plant more trees

This is possibly the most important method. Since the dawn of civilization, we have cut innumerable trees, leading to a wide amount of deforestation. It is time for us to plant more and more trees to keep the air clean as trees provide oxygen, shelter and food to all the animals on this planet. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.

Reusable materials

Do not use disposable bottles, cups, straws, grocery bags, plates and utensils. Those are made from single-use plastic which does not decompose and hurts the soil, oceans and marine life. Try to use more reusable items everywhere and make people aware of them.

Reduce carbon emission

The Environmental Protection Agency of the United States has stated that every year, a normal passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Hence, we have to avoid taking cars as much as possible. We cover short distances by walking and bigger distances by cycling, which will also keep us fit. We can also carpool with friends and office colleagues to the destination.
