New Delhi: Every year on January 26, Republic Day is celebrated in India. The day marks the time when India, after gaining Independence from the British colonial rule in 1947, became a Republic, signaling the beginning of a new chapter for our country. In January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India which is the supreme legal document of the land came into effect. Hence, every year the Republic Day is celebrated with great pomp and splendor as the day reminds us of the democratic values that guides the nation.
Republic Day: The parade in Delhi
On Republic Day, in different parts of the country, flag hoisting ceremonies and parades by armed forces and school children are held. The grandest and most important of these parades is held at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, which showcases a multi-hued image of the country’s rich cultural heritage and military prowess.
The Delhi Republic Day parade is the largest and most important parade that marks the Republic Day celebrations in our country. It takes place on January 26 and is the main attraction of the day. In 1950, the first parade was held and every year, Delhi decks up to host the parade. The President of India presides over the parade.
At the beginning of the parade, the President unfurls the National Flag. Then the parade marches from the Rashtrapati Bhavan on the Kartavya Path to India Gate. From there, the parade goes to the Red Fort. Several regiments of Army, Navy and Air Force march along with their bands. Also, several states display their tableaux signifying their cultures. The President also awards medals of bravery to the people from the armed forces and also the civilians who have distinguished themselves by courageous acts. At the end of the parade, Armed Forces and civil security services perform daredevil motorcycle riding display and the Indian Air Force performs a flypast.
The display of tableaux is one of the main attractions of the Delhi parade. The Ministry of Defence conducts the selection process which involves several guidelines. As per the recommendations of the Ministry, the tableaux must represent heritage, culture, historical event, environment and development programmes. Also, the tableaux should not have any logo. Notably, every year, the Delhi Republic Day parade has a Chief Guest. This year, President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto will be the Chief Guest at the parade.
