New Delhi: Hobart Hurricanes defeated Sydney Sixers by 50 runs at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Wednesday, January 1. Nikhil Chaudhary and Chris Jordan’s brilliant all-round performance helped the Hurricanes to end the Sixers’ unbeaten run in the Big Bash League 2024-25.
Matthew Wade and Mitchell Owen provided the Hurricanes an explosive start after Sydney Sixers opted to field first. The openers stitched a 45-run partnership for the first wicket in five overs. Hayden Kerr provided the Sixers’ with their first breakthrough and dismissed Mitchell Owen on 33 (17) runs. Jackson Bird removed Wade and Shai Hope in the same over to put pressure on the hosts.
Captain Ben McDermott and Nikhil Chaudhary batted brilliantly and forged a 70-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Bird took his third wicket of the match and dismissed McDermott on 34 runs while Jack Edwards removed Nikhil who scored 42 runs off 31 balls with the help of two maximums and four boundaries. But the lower middle order failed to make any contribution with the bat as the Sixers made a great comeback in the match to restrict the Hurricanes on 161 runs.

Chris Jordan, Billy Stanlake star with the ball for Hurricanes
The Sixers would’ve been confident heading into the chase but the Hurricanes bowlers did a fantastic job bowled them out for 111 runs in 19.3 overs. The Sixers failed to get a start today and lost wickets at regular intervals.
They lost three big wickets in the powerplay while chasing the target. Only five batters scored in double-digits and none of them managed to go past Moises Henriques’s 22. Chris Jordan picked up three wickets while Stanlake also took two wickets. The Sydney Sixers stayed at the top with eight points on the BBL points table but this victory pushed the Hobart Hurricanes in the top 4 with six points.
