BCCI to host IPL 2025 mega auction despite resistance from franchise owners?

New Delhi: The IPL 2025 mega auction’s relevance has been a talking point ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials met with the owners of 10 IPL franchises in Mumbai on July 31.

A few media reports suggested that player retentions, size of auction, the timing of the mega auction were some of the key matters discussed during the meeting. Notably, owners of KKR (Shahrukh Khan) and SRH (Kavya Maran) were said to ask the scrapping of the mega auction as they wanted to retain their core squad. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal was in the favour of mega auction held every three years as it promotes competitive cricket in the league.

In the latest version of the story, a few reports suggests that the Indian cricket board will remain firm on their stand to conduct the mega auction regardless of its opposition from a few franchises. There is no confirmation over the reports as there was no board member or inside source presenting an internal information.

The BCCI is yet to announce on the possibility of the mega auction, which was held in every four years in its last two events (2018 and 2022).

How does a IPL mega  auction work?

The IPL mega auction shuffles the teams completely with only a handful of players likely to continue with the same franchise. The franchises are allowed to retain a certain amount of players under a cap prize or else they can retain the players during the auction with the right to match (RTM) card option. In case of RTM, the franchise will have to pay the prize of their player where the final auction bidding was stopped.

In the IPL 2022 mega auction, each franchise was allowed to retain four players but there was no facility for RTM card as the BCCI wanted two new franchises to have the equal opportunity in the bidding contest. If reports are to be believed then the Indian board will allow IPL teams to retain between 5-6 players if the IPL 2025 mega auction once it is finalised.

Notably, owners of KKR (Shahrukh Khan) and SRH (Kavya Maran) were said to ask the scrapping of the mega auction as they wanted to retain their core squad.  Sports Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
