New Delhi: Aiden Markram played a crucial role in South Africa’s winning toast as they lifted the trophy after 27 years 27-year wait. The Proteas defeated the defending champions Australia by five wickets by five wickets at Lord’s.

Markram’s knock of 136 runs will go down as one of the most important knocks in the history of South African cricket. The 30-year-old opener took them close to finishing line, falling with his wicket falling off with six runs remaining to complete the job.

Following a powerful performance which earned him the man of the match award, he was seen making his way over from the edge of the boundary where the rest of the players were enjoying a lap of honour around the home of cricket over to a group of fans. He then proceeded to embrace someone in the stands before chugging the beer. Later, in the press conference, he revealed the moment.

Markram said, “Yeah, that was cool. That was one of my mates from school- He wanted me to come over and I said, ‘Flip man, I can’t, it’s too busy, it’s chaos.’ And then he was like, ‘Oh, here’s a beer.’ And I was like, ‘OK, I’m in.’” The gentleman received a round of applause for his honesty. He added, “So, I’ve had my first one for today and I’m pretty sure there’ll be a few more.”

The 30-year-old had led South Africa to the 2024 T20 World Cup final, but was scarred by defeat when victory was totally in sight. He even got out on duck in the first innings, but the thought of how he felt after getting out in the World Cup served as motivation for the Proteas batter to stay at the crease and get the job done.

Markram was happy with the victory as all questions have been answered now, and finally, they need to hear ‘chokers’ again.

Aiden Markram’s brilliant 136 powers South Africa to a historic WTC final win over Australia, ending a 27-year ICC trophy drought at Lord’s.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
