The total number of registered equity investors in India stood at 9.5 crore at the end of May 2024 and as much as 40.1% of them are below 30 years of age – far more than any other age groups who trust the stock markets with their hard-earned money. The share of this youngest age group in the stock markets has zoomed after the Covid-19 pandemic.
At no point in recent times did any particular age group enjoy such dominance in the equity investor base in the country, recent NSE data have revealed. The report by NSE has also revealed a fast decline in the age of investors in India.
Equity investment: 30-39 age group receding
A far smaller share 29.2% are in the age group 30-39 years.
The next lot 40-49 years are far behind at 15.4%, while those between 50-59 years of age are almost insignificant at a mere 8%.
The smallest age cohort – 60-69 years – is at 7.3%.
Of equal significance is the rapidity with which the youngest age group has risen in prominence. In March 2018, just a little more than six years ago, this group had only 22.9% share of the equity investor universe in this country. In fact, in March 2019, it shrunk marginally to 22.6%.
Rapid rise
Then this group expanded at a searing pace – 23.5% in March 2020, 29.4% in March 2021, 37.5% in March 2022, 38.5% in March 2023, 40% in March 2024 and 40.1% in May 2024.
The largest cohort in March 2018 was investors between 30 and 39 years constituting 31% of the investor base in the country. This one rose marginally in March 2019 and March 2020 but shrunk fast subsequently to below 30%. Their year-wise share – 31.1% in 2019, 31.2% in March 2020, 30.4% in March 2021, 28.9% in March 2022, 29.2% in March 2023, 29.1% in March 2024 and 29.2% in May 2024.
Dramatic drop in mean age
The 40-49-year cohort stood at 20.3% in March 2018 but shrunk to 15.4% in May 2024. The 50-59-year group share went down from 13.1% to 8% while the 60-69-year basket moved from 12.7% to 7.3% between March 2018 and May 2024.
In the same time period, the mean age group of the Indian equity investor dropped from 38 years to 32 years and the median age came down from 41 years to 36 years.
