New Delhi: England captain Ben Stokes on Monday limped off the field during the third day of the third Test match against New Zealand at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. The all-rounder felt in discomfort while bowling his third over in the day during the second innings of New Zealand.
It was later reported that Stokes suffered an issue with his hamstring in left leg, and hence, had to leave the field as a precautionary step. He was seen in pain after he delivered the second ball of the third over and then left toward the dressing room.
As per multiple reports, the England team management have released a statement, confirming the seriousness over Stokes’ injury. It mentioned that the 33-year-old player is receiving treatment currently and won’t return to the field for the rest of the day, though a further assessment will be carried to check his availability to bat in England’s chase in the second innings.
This isn’t the first time Stokes has encountered issues with his hamstring. He suffered an injury during the men’s Hundred in August, which further led the Durham player to miss the home Test series against Sri Lanka and the first Multan Test against Pakistan.
As per a report by Times of India, Stokes bowled 23 overs in the first innings of New Zealand in this match, which was the most bowled by him in a single day in his Test career comprising 110 matches. Apart from that, the 66.3 overs (399 balls) is the most the England captain has bowled in a series since assuming red-ball captaincy with the national team.
New Zealand set England mammoth target
Star New Zealand batter Kane Williamson slammed 156 runs to power his team’s score to 453 in the second innings. The Black Caps capitalised on the 204-run lead from the first innings to set up Stokes and Co. a humongous total of 658. This will be the final Test of veteran pacer Tim Southee who will end his 16-year-long career in red ball.
