New Delhi: Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world. However, according to doctors, the solution to this largely lies in dietary choices. Therefore, it is advised to eat the right kind of foods – that is proteins and healthy fats along with essential vitamins – to keep cardiovascular crises at bay. But at a time when unhealthy eating habits have taken precedence, it is not always possible to meet the nutrient requirements solely through diet. As a result, supplements become necessary. In an Instagram post, cardiac surgeon Dr Jeremy London listed three key supplements that are good for the heart.

  1. CoQ10: Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that is absorbed by the cells in the form of energy and it boosts heart function significantly. In a 2022 analysis published by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, it was found that eating CoQ10 supplements can reduce diabetes and heart disease risk.
  2. Omega-3s: Omega-3 fats are the good kind of fats that improve heart health in the long run. Often found in fish and fish oil supplements, these regulate cholesterol levels and help strike the perfect balance between good and bad cholesterol. It can also help regulate blood pressure levels. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the two key omega-3s that are largely found in salmon, herring, and sardines. ALA(alpha-linolenic acid) is found in plant foods like chia seeds, walnuts, and flaxseeds.
  3. Magnesium: Magnesium helps control heart rhythm and rate and it is strongly associated with a lower risk of heart diseases. Researchers say that this supports insulin metabolism and has anti-inflammatory effects on the body.

Supplements to avoid

When it comes to heart health, one must know what choices to make. Not every supplement goes well with the other – for instance, CoQ10 supplements should not be taken with Coumadin. Furthermore, red yeast rice that has monacolin K can hurt garlic supplements that intensify the effects of a blood thinner.
